Strawberry Soba Noodle Salad
It may be a tad late in the (strawberry) season to be posting this, but it’s not too late to make this salad, which is perfect for this hot time of year. It’s a recipe I created for my Short Stack edition, which was published last year, that combines some rather unusual flavors to great effect.
I set out to gather the ingredients in the Hamptons, where I have a weekend house, and where good food abounds, especially in the summer, but it can be hit or miss with something as specific as a shisito, so I was skeptical about finding them. They are an important element for this salad, since they balance the sweetness of the strawberries, helping to veer the flavors into savory territory. I didn’t have to look far, as it turns out. I stopped by my favorite farmstand- Marilee Foster’s in Sagaponack, and sure enough, she had shisitos! I’ve known Marilee for a long time, and have been eating and enjoying her vegetables (and eggs!) for years. Even though I have moved farther away from her farm, I still make the trip just to stock up on all of her incredible produce.
Although this salad is wonderful with the sweet little strawberries that are in season for just a fleeting month around here, it is still very good with regular supermarket berries, or if you are lucky enough to live near a farmer’s market that offers the Tristar variety that is available all summer long, like at Mountain Sweet Berry Farm in the Union Square Greenmarket in NYC, by all means, use them.Get the recipe here.
